Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Seasonal Affective Disorder is unique in a sense when compared to other mood disorders due to the fact that the disorder is only present from late fall to early spring instead of all year round. SAD is considered to be a type of depression that occurs the same time every year. Symptoms of this disorder tend to start off mild and then become more severe as the winter season progresses. These symptoms include: depression, hopelessness, anxiety, loss of energy, social withdraw, and loss of interest in activities you once liked. Treatment for seasonal affective disorder include light therapy, medications and psychotherapy. Light therapy is a unique treatment that mimics sunlight in which we are lacking due to winter. A follow-up post will be done to further discuss light therapy since it is somewhat unfamiliar to many of us.

Types of Down Syndrome

There are three different types of Down Syndrome. These types are trisomy 21, mosaicism, and translocation.

1. Trisomy 21  is called nondisjunction which is an error in cell division and accounts for 95% of Down Syndrome cases.

2. Mosaicism happens when an error in cell division of chromosome 21 takes place in one of the cell divisions. This type accounts for 1% of cases and the characteristics of Down Syndrome are less than the other two types of Down Syndrome.

3. Translocation occurs when part of chromosome 21 breaks off during cell division and accounts for 4% of Down Syndrome cases.

“My face may be different but my feelings the same

I laugh and I cry And I take pride in my gains

I was sent here among you to teach you to love

As God in heavens looks down from above

To him I’m no different his love knows no bounds

Its those among you in cities and towns

To judge me in standards that man has imparted

But this family I’ve chosen will help me get started

For I’m one of the children so special and  few

That came here to learn the same lessons as you

That love is acceptance it must come from the heart

We all have the same purpose though not the same start

The lord gave me life to live and embrace

And I’ll do as you do but at my own pace”
