Soldiers and Suicide

Soldiers and suicide is very common. Every day about 22 Veterans and 1 Active Duty Soldier take their own lives. Most soldiers had a mental health issue but there is also the military “shame” surrounding PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), they instead turn to suicide as their only option to relieve suffering. About a third of soldiers who attempted suicide are associated with mental disorders; that had developed before they joined the Army. However, what I found to be interesting is that women who are in the military are still at a lower risk of suicide than men.

  1. This just shows that PTSD is more common than we realize. I wish the stigma didn’t exist that if you have PTSD (or any mental disorder) that it means you are in a way “weak” or “worthy of shame”.
