Causes and Risk Factors

Last week I spoke on some warning signs to normal vs abnormal behavior. This week I wanted to focus on causes and risk factors. A lot of parents label their children as bad or busy but, parents do not look into why an individual could be acting out. Most of time children are either suffering from an disorder or their are some factors causes abnormal behavior in a child. For example if a child experience trauma at a  young age there is a high chance the individual will cope with situation by  abnormal behavior seeking for attention by parents or any authority. Some often used the term Oppositional Defiant Disorder also known as ODD.

Causes:

Genetic: if there is family history of any mental illness it is likely a child will have ODD.

Physical: Brain chemical are unbalanced then it prohibits proper communication with others parts of the brain.

Environmental: children always use model behavior. Therefore, if a child is raised in a abusive, violence, and destructive environment then more then likely the child will behave in that manner.

Risk Factors:

  • Familial discord
  • Dysfunctional home life
  • Exposure to violence
  • History of mental illness within the family
  • Exposure to substance abuse
  • Inconsistent parenting (inconsistent discipline, inconsistent interaction, etc.)
  • Abuse / neglect
